1. NordVPN: Best VPN Service Overall

Our US connection reported 181.50 Mbps through NordVPN. No other VPN in the group came within 6 Mbps of that. Every streaming platform we tried let it through, with Pluto TV and Prime Video catching it only on repeat attempts. Then the ping surprised us. Ping counts the delay before a server answers, and NordVPN needed 60 ms to the UK, the highest reading of all ten. Panama imposes no data-retention duty. The no-logs policy has passed 6 Deloitte audits, with February 2026 the latest.

Post-quantum encryption on NordLynx guards traffic against code-breaking methods that don’t exist yet. 2. Proton VPN: Best VPN for Privacy

No VPN answered our US servers quicker. Proton VPN needed 109 ms, the shortest delay of the round, and gave back 10.2% of our download speed across the 3 destinations with VPN Accelerator on. Seven of the 9 platforms let it through; Pluto TV and ITV didn’t. Swiss law places it beyond the 5, 9 and 14 Eyes agreements, and Securitum has examined the no-logs policy. Publishing the app source means the code can be matched against the promises. The network covers 149 countries, the same as NordVPN.

Secure Core sends traffic through a second protected server before it leaves for the wider internet, Stealth applies obfuscation, disguising encrypted traffic as ordinary browsing so a network cannot pick it out, and NetShield strips ads and trackers. New locations opened in Kyrgyzstan, Papua New Guinea, Lebanon, Nicaragua, Gabon and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Support disappointed us. A person joined the chat after a minute, and an emailed question sat unanswered for a full day.

3. ExpressVPN: Most Consistent Speeds at Distance

Tokyo is 9,000 km from our test desk, and ExpressVPN still returned 163.94 Mbps there, the best long-distance reading in the group. Second place on the UK and US destinations gave it the same 7.8% average as NordVPN. Consistency across that spread is unusual, and the speed penalty stays small. Nothing stayed shut: all 9 opened, though ITV and Prime Video spotted it on a handful of tries. Obfuscation is automatic here. Both Lightway Turbo and WireGuard use quantum-resistant encryption.

TrustedServer keeps the network on RAM-based servers, so a reboot erases their contents. KPMG has examined the logging claim, and British Virgin Islands company law imposes no retention duty. Coverage widened to 214 locations in 113 countries in July 2026, and the Advanced and Pro plans bundle Identity Defender plus eSIM data for traveling with a VPN. Windows 11 was the weak spot for us. 4. CyberGhost: Cheap and Trusted VPN Provider

A 39 ms reply from London was the shortest delay in the round, and it belongs to the cheapest capable option. The product was clearly designed around the television. SmartDNS covers an Apple TV, a Samsung or LG set, and a PlayStation with no app to install, and choosing a server means choosing the platform by name off a list. Then Netflix Japan refused it, which we did not expect from a company selling a server labeled for that exact library. 8 other platforms opened, JioHotstar included.

Average speed was mid-table at 13.3%, with Tokyo the slowest, reading at 149.74 Mbps. London gave us 186.96 Mbps, the highest reading of the round and a penalty of just 1.8% on our unprotected baseline. Surfshark opened 8 platforms, and ITV was the only one to block it. Averaged across all three destinations, it gave back 9.6%, placing fourth. Device count beats the 3 ranked higher, since nothing is capped. Every plan includes a static IP address at no charge. IP Rotation changes that address every few minutes while the country stays fixed. Alternative ID creates a separate online identity.

Whitelister decides which apps skip the tunnel. Dausos, a macOS-only protocol of its own design, encrypts to a quantum-resistant standard and passed a Cure53 examination. Two Deloitte examinations, one in 2023 and one in 2025, back the logging policy. Camouflage Mode takes it into China and comparable places. 6. Private Internet Access (PIA): Quality VPN for Customization

10 to 20 seconds is all PIA took to put a person on the other end of a chat, the quickest of the 10 we contacted. Speed came in below our expectations at a 12.7% average, with Tokyo the lowest reading at 141.61 Mbps. 6 of 9 admitted it, but HBO Max, Prime Video, and Netflix Japan didn’t work. A US base normally works against a VPN, and a court case offsets it here. Ordered to produce logs in US proceedings, the company had none. Deloitte has since checked the policy in 2022, 2024 and 2025.

Source code is public, and the settings go further than any rival’s, down to the protocol, the port, and the encryption strength. MACE blocks ads and malicious domains, connections have no ceiling, and Shadowsocks disguises traffic where filtering is heavy. The UI really disappointed me. 7. IPVanish: Top-Rated VPN for Ad and Tracker Filtering

London was fine at 184.82 Mbps, unlike the distance: Tokyo cost IPVanish 38.6% of the connection, and the 3-destination average settled at 21.7%. Netflix rejected it from both the US and Canada; ITV and Prime Video followed, and 5 of 9 opened. Threat Protection Pro on the Advanced plan is the reason to consider it, since it blocks ads, malware, and third-party trackers across the whole connection.

The network takes in 105 countries from 150 locations, with RAM-only status flagged at particular sites instead of applying throughout. Alone among these 10, the monthly plan has no refund attached. Getting past deep packet inspection, the filtering method that reads traffic to identify a VPN, is the case for VyprVPN, and the Chameleon protocol does it well enough to function inside China. All 700 or so servers belong to the company instead of a rented data center, covering 63 countries from 70 locations, so no third party stands between the user and the tunnel. Leviathan Security examined the logging policy, the first outside audit any VPN commissioned. Distance cost it a great deal.

London measured 174.77 Mbps, Tokyo cost 32.5%, and the average settled at 20.8%. Streaming finished last of the group at 4 platforms of 9: ITV, Channel 4, HBO Max, Netflix Japan, and Prime Video blocked it, and Channel 4 blocked nothing else in this comparison. 9. Hide.me: Reliable VPN for MultiHop Routing

Close range suits Hide.me. London returned 182.62 Mbps, Tokyo only 127.56, and the average penalty came to 15.9%. Seven platforms admitted it. ITV and Prime Video were the refusals. Malaysian law involves no intelligence-sharing arrangement; multi-hop chains two servers together, and Stealth Guard gets past filtering in China and similar territories. At 57 countries from 92 locations, this is the second-smallest network.

The free tier hands over unlimited data, then withholds P2P and streaming. Paying moves that to $2.69 per month across 26 months, with 30 days to reverse the decision.

10. Hotspot Shield: Popular VPN for Lightly Filtered Networks

Built on OpenVPN TLS, Hydra gets past light filtering, and that feature is the reason to consider Hotspot Shield. Performance sat near the bottom of the table at 22.2% average. Five platforms of 9 admitted it, with ITV, HBO Max, Prime Video and the Japanese Netflix library refusing. Its own privacy notice undercuts the rest. Domain names are logged, it says, without the full web address and merged into anonymous totals.

So are session length, bandwidth used, and an identifier attached to the device for marketing. Server data goes to encrypted disks, with no RAM-only choice, and American ownership brings Five Eyes membership. Premium opens at $29 for a year, then jumps to $95.99, spanning 80 countries and 10 devices, refundable for 45 days.

How We Tested the Top 10 VPN Services

One connection, one desktop, one round in September 2026:

• Baseline: 190.36 Mbps down, 19.37 Mbps up, 10 ms unprotected ping
• Setup: Windows 11 desktop, Speedtest, 3 measurements per server
• Destinations: UK, US, and Japan, each on the app’s quickest protocol

Not one of the 10 leaked an IP or DNS request. Four companies produced a person in under 20 seconds, PIA quickest of all, followed by NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Surfshark. Proton VPN and VyprVPN needed roughly a minute each, and an AI bot answered every chat first. ITV and Prime Video proved hardest to open, each blocking or intermittently blocking 7 of the 10, while BBC iPlayer let all 10 through.

Why Browser Extensions Beat the Apps

Our most useful discovery had nothing to do with picking servers. Browser extensions went undetected on platforms that had already caught the desktop app. Three extensions with location spoofing enabled, from NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN, unlocked every platform we aimed them at.

Some of those same platforms had already turned the desktop clients away. So when a service refuses to play, the extension deserves a try ahead of a different city. The same trick changes your apparent location on restricted sites where the block originates at the network.

What Kept Some VPNs Off This List

Logging records rule out PureVPN and Hola VPN. Handing subscriber data to authorities rules out HMA VPN.
