Even when you burn through the allowance, the connection doesn’t just die: the app drops into a slower 1 Mbps emergency mode that keeps your traffic encrypted instead of leaving your Mac exposed.

Free users pick from 13 locations in 10 countries, and the list includes rarities like Brazil and Argentina, spots you won’t find on any other free tier in this roundup. The free macOS VPN app is regularly updated and includes a kill switch, a feature many VPNs reserve for paying customers, though its SmartRoute split tunneling isn’t available on Mac. Being based in Iceland, with its strong privacy laws, doesn’t hurt either, though we’d like to see the no-logs policy go through an independent audit someday.

A single long video call can use most of it. And early 2026 brought a downgrade: the free plan lost server selection entirely, assigning you a random location instead, and split tunneling moved behind the paywall. Shortcomings of a Free VPN for Mac

Every free Mac VPN limits something:

• Data or speed: PrivadoVPN and Windscribe were the quickest free plans but cap data at 10 GB a month, while the unlimited free plans from Proton VPN and Hide.me were slower. Paid VPNs such as NordVPN and Proton VPN have no data limit.
• Streaming: only Windscribe and PrivadoVPN unblocked more than one Netflix library on their free plans, and their data caps cut viewing short. To unblock Netflix regularly, a paid VPN is the realistic choice.
• Devices: most free plans cover one device at a time. Windscribe and TunnelBear are the exceptions.
