Let’s kick off this Proton VPN review by discussing our experience with it. We’ll start with its compatibility, as your first contact with the VPN will be through its apps. Right off the bat, we have positive news.
Desktop and Mobile Experience
The provider supports all mobile and desktop platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Linux, and Android. It also includes extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Brave. However, in our Proton VPN review, we haven’t found SmartDNS, which would’ve been welcome for non-VPN-supported platforms.
The VPN has native clients for all systems, allowing you to install and use the VPN easily. But what’s the user experience like? We’d say stellar. A new, revamped app looks great, and it’s pretty snappy. On the downside, it’s not very beginner-friendly, and as attractive as it is, it may put off hardcore beginners.
While you can connect with one click, and that works wonderfully, the app does look like a tech fest. As experts, we enjoyed it, but still admit that the Settings menu is a bit of a mess. We love its color-changing UI, where the app is green when you connect and red when you disconnect, and is without protection.
Proton VPN does a good job on mobile apps. They’re more straightforwardm as expected from mobile VPN applications. As for its browser extension, it’s phenomenal, especially its VPN for Chrome, with spoofing, Secure Core routing, and other advanced features found in its full apps. Finally, you get 10 simultaneous connections.
TV & Streaming Devices Support
Our Proton VPN review and test wouldn’t be complete without reviewing its streaming apps. Its support for Android spawns support for Android TV and a variety of Smart TVs. To that, we should add Fire TV Stick support and its native client for this platform. Apple TV, Nvidia Shield TV, and others are all supported.
Support for Gaming Consoles
Proton VPN advertises itself as the best VPN for gaming, so its gaming support is stellar. This is because it works on PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch consoles through a router. It also allows you to share your VPN connection from a PC. Unfortunately, it lacks SmartDNS (learn more about it here) that we’ve seen in its rivals.
Router Support
In our Proton VPN review, we tested it many times, and its router support isn’t bad, although it could be better. It offers guides for several router firmware versions. Proton VPN supports AsusWRT, DD-WRT, OpenWRT, pfSense, Tomato, Vilfo, and others. Furthermore, you get tutorials with images for each.

Based in Switzerland, the country’s stern privacy laws make for one of the safest services you can get. However, let’s review Proton VPN and its security features and see what exactly we get.
Modern Tunneling Protocols & Encryption
The VPN offers the best tunneling protocols:

We didn’t confirm this by having connection issues, but rather through a deliberate VPN shutdown. To put it simply, we forced the VPN to shut down and tested if we could still go online and browse. Ten out of ten times, we couldn’t, which implied that the kill switch was alive and well. Learn how it works in detail here.
IPv6 & DNS Leak Protection
Many VPNs protect your IPv4 address only, but if you’re using IPv6, it could get exposed. However, Proton VPN protects you top-to-bottom. If you use an IPv6 address, it won’t leak if your VPN connection falters. Actually, we have a Proton VPN test for IP and DNS leaks, and we’ll talk about it a bit later in this review.
Split Tunneling
Split tunneling is yet another great feature. It lets you choose which apps or IPs will go through the VPN tunnel. In the app, you’ll see that Proton VPN offers a choice of both apps and IP addresses; super convenient. Split tunneling is useful for gaming, where you don’t want the VPN to influence your ping negatively.
That is, if we’re talking about a VPN that’s not as fast as ExpressVPN or even NordVPN. We’ll see if this one matches the two speed champs in our tests.
Standout Features: Secure Core & NetShield
Secure Core servers are pretty interesting. They’re Double Hop servers, which means all your traffic is routed through the VPN twice. Instead of using two random servers, one of the two servers is Proton VPN’s, and is in Iceland, Switzerland, or Sweden. Why is this vital? Because no third party is involved.
And since the provider operates on a no-log policy, these servers hold no data. Of course, a combination like this won’t be the fastest around. It’s built for security and privacy. When you enable NetShield, you can also block ads, trackers, and malicious sites, enhancing your web privacy and security with a click.
NetShield works well, and it actually shows how many threats it has blocked. You’ll also see the types of blocked threats, such as ads, malware, and trackers; super cool.
Alternative Routing
In this Proton VPN review and test, we noticed alternative routing used to allow access to its websites in restricted areas. It’s ON by default, and we advise keeping it that way. However, don’t mistake this feature for Stealth VPN because they’re different. We’ll discuss censorship later in our Proton VPN review for 2026.
Other Features
In our analysis, we discovered a few more features we want to review:
- Full disk encryption. The provider doesn’t use servers based on RAM. Instead, it uses traditional HDD servers but with full disk encryption for the same effect. Full disk encryption is just as effective at protecting your privacy and data, so we don’t see the lack of RAM servers as a negative.
- Port Forwarding. It routes your connection through its firewalls for safe and secure torrenting. Port forwarding in VPNs is also useful for gaming, for decreasing latency and smoother performance.
- Private DNS. The company’s no-log DNS for privacy. However, it also allows you to use a custom DNS. We don’t recommend that unless it’s a trusted DNS that doesn’t track or log your activities.
Proton VPN IP and DNS Leak Test: No Leaks Found
Let’s do some practical work in this Proton VPN Review. As said, we need to test the VPN for IP and DNS leaks, which we can do on several websites. We first connect to a US server and then visit ipleak.net.
As you can see, the VPN shows no IP and DNS leaks, expected from a service of this caliber. To confirm these results, we use browserleaks.com, and here, Proton VPN shows the same great results.
Needless to say, we just confirmed everything we said. Proton VPN is safe and trustworthy, and with no potential leaks on the horizon, you can rest assured that you’ll never get exposed to the watchful eyes.
Does It Have a No-Logging Policy?
As said at the start, the provider is based in Switzerland, a country with very strict privacy laws. The jurisdiction directly influences a VPN’s level of privacy. Thus, those in the US and UK aren’t so private, and those in the British Virgin Islands, Panama, Romania, Bulgaria, and Switzerland are much better in this regard.
So, does Proton VPN store logs? If you haven’t figured it out by now, go back and read everything again.
Which Information isn’t Stored?
If you do a Google search on Proton VPN zero logs, you’ll find more information about its logging practices. As you can see, the provider stores no logs of sensitive information. This includes websites you visit, IP address, session lengths, location-based data, etc. Proton VPN knows nothing about your online activities.
We value that it doesn’t store session duration and timestamps, which many VPNs will store. Furthermore, Proton VPN uses bare-metal servers and has total control over them, so no third-party service interferes. Lastly, its apps are open-source, so Proton VPN has all cards on the table for the highest level of transparency.
Which Information is Stored?
Based on its privacy policy, the provider stores pretty much nothing, apart from your basic information needed for subscription. It states that it may throttle your speed in cases of excessive consumption to ensure service quality for free users. However, it mentions nothing that would sound off our alarm bells.
In 2026, this is one of the top no-log VPNs, and compared to the rest, including NordVPN or ExpressVPN, it stores way less information. But that’s not all, as it also holds several security audits. Check this out.
Third-Party Audits
The provider has a few third-party audits from Securitum, Ruben Santamarta (independent security researcher), and SEC Consult. We also learned that it has an annual no-log policy audit to confirm its claims each year. In addition, Proton VPN’s open-source apps have also been audited many times for privacy.
In 2019, the company’s privacy policy was also put to the test. It was ordered to turn over logs to identify the user. As stated on Proton VPN’s site, it couldn’t comply because logs did not exist. The VPN has all the needed features to be trustworthy: a proven no-log policy, open-source apps, and transparency reports.
Proton VPN Streaming: Netflix & Other Platforms Tested
Having in mind Proton VPN’s security, let’s move on to something more exciting. This VPN isn’t known for its great streaming capabilities, but in this Proton VPN review, many of you will end up surprised.
Does Proton VPN Work on Netflix?
Yes, it does, and we tested over thirty libraries for this review. Out of these, the provider has unblocked around ten, which is still respectable. For reference, in our CyberGhost review, the provider unblocked the same number of catalogs, but it offered dedicated streaming servers. Proton VPN doesn’t, on the other hand.
So, which libraries could we access? All the most popular ones, such as those from the USA, the UK, Japan, Canada, Australia, and some European libraries. Our experience on Netflix was more than positive, with little to no buffering and smooth streaming. Sadly, less popular ones won’t work, but we don’t blame it much.
This is a more privacy-centric service, not specifically one for endless streaming. If that’s your preference, you may want to check out Surfshark with over thirty unblocked Netflix catalogs in our tests.
What About Other Platforms?
Our streaming test wasn’t only on Netflix. We used BBC iPlayer, Pluto TV, Hotstar, HBO Max, and Hulu. Proton VPN showed mixed, although still great, results. The only platform that was problematic was Hulu, and with a bit of server switching, it worked. However, all the others worked perfectly, without issues.
Most notably, the provider lets you unblock HBO Max and BBC iPlayer abroad, offering the possibility for a wealth of content. It used to offer dedicated streaming servers, but in 2026, it ditched them for regular servers that still work well. That said, this part of the review ends on a positive note. Next up, speed tests.
Speed Tests: Here’s How Fast Proton VPN is in 2026
This Proton VPN review includes full speed tests. As you’ll see, it’s not the fastest option, but it’s far from the slowest, either. At the start, we tested the VPN for three days, three times a day, and in four server locations. These include the US, the UK, Australia, and Japan. At the time, we were in Southeastern Europe.

Judging by the results above, Proton VPN is slower than NordVPN, which is still the fastest VPN. However, while using the server in the UK, the speed reduction isn’t that noticeable. The US server showed decent results, with an increase in latency. Australian and Japanese servers suffered a huge ping increase.

We performed these tests with the so-called VPN Accelerator, which the provider uses for boosting the performance. Though, to be honest, with or without it, the VPN performed the same, with only minor positive differences when it was ON. It’s clear as day that it won’t win any medals for its performance.
Is Proton VPN Good for Gaming?
On that note, let’s address gaming in our Proton VPN review for 2026. Gaming performance is average, and it’s not bad when using close-distance servers. We had no issues playing fast-paced shooters online with Proton VPN, and we’d say it’s a good VPN for Black Ops 7 and other popular shooters for low latency.
When enabling port forwarding, the situation is a bit better, so we recommend turning it on before gaming sessions. That said, it’s better to get a bit faster VPN for gaming instead, and we recommend NordVPN.
Can I Use Proton VPN for P2P and Torrenting?
Torrenting with Proton VPN is enjoyable thanks to its dedicated P2P servers. The good news is that it offers them in 127 countries, so pretty much the entire network is optimized. We tested it on qBitTorrent primarily, but it’s also a respectable VPN for uTorrent and many other torrent clients for privacy and speed.
In our tests, download speeds were sufficient, and when we used port forwarding, we didn’t notice any particular improvements. However, we used nearby servers; European locations like Serbia, Bulgaria, Hungary, and others. With this setup, we never had issues with slow downloads and connection interruptions.
Is it Working in China & Other Censored Countries?
In this Proton VPN test and review, we should also talk about bypassing censorship. Not many VPNs are known for working in China and similar countries, except for NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and Astrill VPN. Proton VPN does offer Stealth VPN, and since it hides your VPN connection, it should work.
Well, in 2026, that’s definitely not the case, as reported by our testers and other users. Even enabling alternative routing won’t work. However, this doesn’t mean it performs poorly when using it in other censored regions. We tested it in the UAE, Turkey, and Russia, and it was very reliable with Stealth VPN.
Proton VPN’s performance in China could be improved, and given its fast improvement rate in other aspects, we believe it’ll get there. So far, better options for China are NordVPN and Surfshark.
Servers and Server Locations
Proton VPN has an impressive server variety, but more importantly, a huge server network. At the moment, it has over 18,000 servers in 129 countries, making it larger than some of the most prominent providers, including NordVPN, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and others. It’s not perfect, as it lacks dedicated IP addresses.
However, it offers torrenting and Tor over VPN servers for browsing the dark web privately. It also has a wealth of servers in less popular locations. We were surprised to see Puerto Rico on the list, for example. In the USA and Europe, it has the most servers, including Russia and Turkey, where many VPNs lack servers.
Proton VPN Pricing Review
As we approach the end of this Proton VPN review, it’s time to see how much it costs. The VPN has slashed its price drastically in the last few years; the biennial plan is now only $3 per month, while the annual plan costs $3.99 per month. Proton VPN’s price is now lower than that of NordVPN and ExpressVPN.
If you’re looking for cheaper Proton VPN alternatives, they would only include CyberGhost, Surfshark, and Private Internet Access. The trick is, they’re not better. Noteworthy is that the VPN includes Unlimited plans, which start at $7.99 per month for two years, with all of the premium Proton products.
You’ll get Pass, Mail, Calendar, and Drive in this plan. We tested it as well and realized it’s a good package for business users. As an individual, you’re better off with the VPN Plus plan at a said price. Finally, there’s the free plan with unlimited data, reduced speeds, and only a few server locations (randomly selected).

In our in-depth Proton VPN review for 2026, the least favorite part is customer support. With recent improvements and rebranding, we hoped that Proton VPN would bring new stuff in. It did. There’s live chat support for customers, but if you aren’t one, you have to use its ticket support or the help center.
As a customer, you’ll enjoy its support. It’s fast, responsive, and very helpful. As a potential customer, its email/ticketing support isn’t the fastest, and the response usually arrives in about a few hours. On the other hand, its help center is very well done, with many tutorials and FAQs for different needs.
Still, we can’t say we didn’t expect more from Proton VPN, at least from its live chat service that’s otherwise available for everyone in ExpressVPN, one of its main rivals (we compared the two here).
What We Don’t Like About Proton VPN
Proton VPN is excellent and is one of the best VPN services around. However, for the price, it could include better and more responsive customer support. We’re also not entirely content with its performance, which could be improved, particularly for Ultra HD streaming and low-ping gaming, especially on distant servers.
Proton VPN’s Stealth protocol also isn’t the most efficient, as it fails to work in China, but it’s not a major flaw, as most VPNs suffer here. We’d also mention the lack of SmartDNS, which we’ve seen in other, even cheaper providers. Overall, it’s a great option for a price of under three dollars, with no major downsides.
Conclusion: Swiss Privacy at its Finest
Concluding our Proton VPN review for 2026, we must say we’re impressed. It managed to somehow lower its price while improving the quality, which sounds unreal. But it is real.
