Can You Use WhatsApp in China? Yes, With the Right Setup

No, WhatsApp doesn’t work on Chinese networks. China has blocked it since September 2017, and the block remains in 2026, on Chinese SIM cards and Wi-Fi alike. It works normally in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. On the mainland, two methods get it working: roaming data from a foreign SIM or travel eSIM, or a VPN with obfuscation.

In our November tests on Hong Kong servers, NordVPN, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN carried WhatsApp messages, photos, and calls, though China’s April 2026 crackdown has made VPN connections less dependable.

Does WhatsApp Work in China?

Not on a standard connection. China fully blocked WhatsApp in September 2017, after cutting its photo and video sharing that July. On hotel Wi-Fi, airport Wi-Fi, or a Chinese SIM card, messages stay on “sending” and calls fail to connect. The block applies to foreign visitors and residents alike.

• Mainland China: blocked, including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou.
• Hong Kong and Macau: WhatsApp works normally, because both operate outside the Great Firewall’s filtering.
• Taiwan: WhatsApp works normally.

Installing the app is harder as well. In April 2024, Apple removed WhatsApp from China’s App Store on a government order, and Google Play is blocked on the mainland. Set WhatsApp up at home, including the SMS verification of your number.

Why Is WhatsApp Banned in China?

WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, so neither Meta nor the Chinese authorities can read messages as they pass. China requires messaging services operating there to support censorship and real-name registration, and WhatsApp doesn’t. The ban fits a wider pattern: Facebook has been blocked since 2009, and Instagram since 2014, and Chinese users rely on domestic apps. Two Ways to Use WhatsApp in China

Roaming Data or a Travel eSIM

A foreign SIM on international roaming, or a travel eSIM, sends your mobile data back through a foreign network, often in Hong Kong or Singapore. That data never passes the Great Firewall, so WhatsApp works without a VPN. The catch is that it only covers mobile data: once your phone joins hotel or café Wi-Fi, WhatsApp is blocked again. Roaming charges from a home carrier can also be high, so check the daily rate before you travel.

A VPN With Obfuscation

A VPN is a method for Wi-Fi, laptops, and Chinese SIM cards. It has to disguise its traffic because China detects and blocks standard VPN connections. In April 2026, Chinese authorities told network providers to cut off VPN services, and connections have been harder to keep stable since, so choose a VPN that works in China and keep a backup. How WhatsApp Worked on Hong Kong Servers

We tested WhatsApp on a Galaxy S26 Ultra in November, connected to each VPN’s Hong Kong server with obfuscation enabled. Messages, photos, and voice and video calls worked on NordVPN, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN. Calls started instantly, with only occasional minor stutters, and latency was higher on each VPN because of the distance from Europe to Hong Kong.

Proton VPN was the only one with an interruption: during one video call, WhatsApp showed a poor-connection pause, recovered within a few seconds, and ran normally after that. Download and upload speeds on the same Hong Kong servers, from our desktop round on a 190.36 Mbps connection.

A test from Europe can’t reproduce the Great Firewall, so connections from the mainland can take several attempts.

Best VPNs for WhatsApp in China

1. NordVPN: Best VPN for WhatsApp in China

NordVPN’s obfuscated Hong Kong server recorded 116.30 Mbps, and WhatsApp calls started instantly on it. Obfuscated servers also operate in Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore, the next-nearest locations when Hong Kong is slow. NordWhisper, its newer obfuscation protocol, is a second choice, and Double VPN adds a second encrypted hop for 2.9% of speed in our tests.

The upload figure is the weak point: 5.71 Mbps on the obfuscated server is enough for voice and video calls, but sending long videos takes longer. 2. Proton VPN: Best for Private Messaging

Proton VPN’s Stealth protocol works on any server, so there’s no special server list to search. Its Hong Kong server recorded 60.75 Mbps with Stealth, and WhatsApp messages and calls worked, with one short pause during a video call. Secure Core sends traffic through Switzerland, Iceland, or Sweden first, and Securitum has audited Proton VPN’s no-logs policy every year since 2022.

Its free plan includes Stealth, but it assigns the country, so a Hong Kong server isn’t guaranteed. On a two-year term, the VPN Plus plan is under $3 a month and covers 10 devices. Support was slower than NordVPN’s and ExpressVPN’s, with email replies taking up to a day.

3. ExpressVPN: Best for Speed on Hong Kong Servers

ExpressVPN recorded 133.56 Mbps down and 16.97 Mbps up on its Hong Kong server, a far higher upload than NordVPN’s or Proton VPN’s for sending photos and videos. It obfuscates every server automatically, so there’s nothing to enable before connecting, and it connected in one to two seconds in our tests.

What Do People in China Use Instead of WhatsApp?

WeChat. Tencent launched it in 2011, and it handles messaging, voice and video calls, and payments for most people in China. Foreign visitors often set it up for WeChat Pay as well. WeChat operates under Chinese law, so messages can be monitored and removed. QQ, also from Tencent, and DingTalk for work are the other common choices.

Is It Legal to Use WhatsApp With a VPN in China?

It’s a gray area. Having WhatsApp on your phone isn’t an offense, but China permits only government-approved VPNs, and commercial VPNs aren’t among them. Enforcement has targeted people selling VPN access, while individual users have faced occasional fines.
