2. Install NordVPN and Sign In

NordVPN has apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Fire TV, Apple TV, and Android TV, and one subscription covers 10 devices at once. On a phone or TV, install it from the app store. On a computer, download the setup file from NordVPN’s website and run it.

3. Connect to a Server in the Right Country

The harder libraries are where NordVPN made the difference. Netflix Hong Kong, Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia, and Algeria detected other VPNs in our tests, but NordVPN unblocked them on its standard servers. Netflix Taiwan was the exception in one respect: it detected the desktop app, and the browser extension unblocked it. Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for 4K, so even distant libraries such as Japan’s left a wide margin. Obfuscated servers are a different tool. They use NordWhisper, NordVPN’s protocol for disguising VPN traffic as regular web traffic, and they’re built for restrictive networks.

That’s why obfuscation is crucial for VPN use in China. For Netflix, however, standard servers are faster and did the job in every catalog we tested. When Netflix detects a VPN, it shows a proxy error or shrinks the catalog to Netflix Originals. These fixes solve most cases, starting with the quickest:

• Switch servers in the same country. Netflix flags individual IP addresses, so a second server often works where the first didn’t.
• Clear your browser’s cookies and cache. Stored data can still point to your actual location, and clearing it brought back full catalogs in our tests when switching servers didn’t.
• Pause the ad and tracker blocker. A VPN that blocks ads is useful elsewhere, but NordVPN’s own support suggests pausing it if Netflix won’t load.
• Disable Secure DNS in your browser. DNS over HTTPS can send lookups around the VPN, so Netflix sees your actual region.

Netflix on Smart TVs and Consoles With SmartDNS

Some screens can’t install NordVPN, such as most Samsung and LG TVs, game consoles, and Roku players. For those, NordVPN offers SmartDNS.
