Why Stake Stopped Working in India

The most common question about Stake comes from India, and Stake didn’t cause it. India passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025, known as PROGA. It received presidential assent in August 2025, the accompanying rules were notified on 22 April 2026, and the Act came into force on 1 May 2026. Section 5 prohibits every online money game, and section 2(1)(g) defines that as any game where a player stakes money expecting winnings, whether the outcome turns on skill, chance, or both.

Rummy, poker, and fantasy sports fall under it alongside casino games. The law covers offshore operators, and it closes the payment routes as well. Banks, UPI, and card networks can’t process transactions for a prohibited platform, so an account with a foreign IP in still has no way to move money. Internet companies have been ordered to block thousands of offshore gambling sites under section 69A of the IT Act.

PROGA targets operators, payment processors and advertisers with fines up to ₹1 crore and up to 3 years’ imprisonment. It doesn’t name players. A Supreme Court challenge to the Act is listed for January 2027, so the position may change. What stays legal in India: free social games, recognized e-sports without betting, licensed offline casinos in Goa, Daman and Sikkim, and state lotteries.

Where Stake Is Blocked in September 2026

The operating company is Medium Rare N.V., licensed OGL/2024/1451/0918 by the Curaçao Gaming Authority, with national licenses in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Denmark. Curaçao covers a lot of territory, and national law overrides it. Over 40 prohibited jurisdictions appear in clause 2. Britain joined them on 11 March 2025, when Stake withdrew from the market.

Does Stake Work in the US?

Stake.com doesn’t, in any state. Stake.us does, and it’s a separate product: a sweepstakes social casino using Gold Coins with no cash value and Stake Cash that can be redeemed for prizes. What Stake’s Terms Say About VPNs

Both products prohibit misrepresenting location. The written penalty is a voided account with the balance kept, deposits included, and on Stake.us a login from an excluded state counts as a serious breach. Signing up sets off an automated read of IP address, device fingerprint, and, on phones, GPS.

A prohibited result blocks the account from being created. Later comes the manual pass: identity documents and proof of address, weighed against the registration location. That request usually lands with a first withdrawal, weeks into an account’s life.
